🏡 What It Really Costs to Live in Split, Croatia — From a Mom Who Moved Here

When people dream about moving abroad, they usually wonder, “Can I actually afford it?”

As someone who almost bought a condo in Santa Barbara while pregnant—and then ended up buying real estate in Croatia instead—I’ve done a lot of number crunching across both continents.

Here’s what daily life actually costs in Split, Croatia—based on how my two daughters and I are living here now.

🏠 How Much is Rent in Split, Croatia?

Rent can fluctuate depending on the season, location, and type of apartment, especially in coastal cities like Split.

• October–May (Low Season): €400–€800/month for a well-equipped apartment

• Long-Term (12+ months): Harder to find due to summer rentals, but totally possible with some effort

• What We Pay: €1,000/month for a 2-bedroom with a backyard, 15 minutes to Old Town, 12 minutes to the beach

For context: in California, I was paying $1,700/month for a basic one-bedroom apartment.

🛒 Grocery + Food Costs in Croatia

You’ll find grocery stores on almost every corner, and they’re surprisingly affordable:

• Milk: under €2

• Bread: €0.60–€1.50

• Grocery bill (2x/week): €40–€65

• Quick eats: €2–€15

• Restaurant meals: €15–€35

• Wine (glass): €5–€8 (vs. $15+ in Santa Barbara!)

Pro tip: Farmers' markets and local bakeries are amazing and budget-friendly.

🎒 Childcare + School Fees

Your options will depend on whether you want your kids in a local Croatian school or an international program:

• Local preschools: start around €350/month per child

• International schools: around €500/month per child

In comparison: when we visited California recently, preschool for both kids was over $2,700/month at the YMCA!

💡 Utilities + Monthly Expenses

Here’s what we typically spend monthly on utilities:

• Electricity: €40–€120/month (depending on use)

• Water: €8–€12

• Trash: €8

• Internet + TV + Cell: about €70 total

💡 My cell phone bill alone in the U.S. was $60/month—so this bundle is a huge savings.

🌿 Lifestyle Perks You Don’t Pay For

Some of the biggest lifestyle wins in Croatia are actually free (or close to it):

• Beaches are free to access

• Parking is affordable and easy to pay via app

• Outdoor spaces and historic sites are everywhere

• You can walk almost everywhere in Split

• There’s a slower, simpler rhythm of life that doesn’t cost extra—but makes a big difference

🇭🇷 Why I Chose Croatia Over California

When I was pregnant, my partner and I were house hunting in Santa Barbara and had been approved for an $800k jumbo loan. We nearly closed on a place—but pulled out at the last minute.

When international flights reopened during COVID, Croatia was one of the few countries open to Americans. With real estate still on my mind, I started exploring what was possible here.

We quickly realized we could buy a seaside property in a major tourist destination for less than the down payment we were planning in California.
